Stattered Glass

1. The processes that are involved in writing of this movie are: plaarism, editing, revising, fake-checking(literature review as we did in class),reporting true stories, and discussion with peers/coworkers.

2. In this movie, characters that collect data for publishing in "New Republic" are: Note taking, interviewing people, observing the events in different places, and remembering every single words and events.

3. Ethical issues that I found in this movie is lies of Stephen's sources, faking stories, arguing, suing etc.

Shitty First Drafts

In Lamott's essay, she emerged the meaning of word " shitty" is the idea of processing writing at first time in order to submit a complete paper. She also mentioned about ways to draft our papers in writing review for first and second time. Based on my perspective, I consider shitting is the method of opening and ending up papers. It is important to draft papers to determine the strongest and the weakest points in essay. I usually do shitty when I do not have any idea to start my paper, so I would do free-writing and then interpretate it to submit the final paper. In order to improve the drafts, I need to revise them many times and review again and again to make sure it is smooth with theme and topic.

Extra credit events

I went to two events which were presented in Elberly auditurium.

The first one was " The Times of Harvy Milk", it was basically focusing about criminology. They mentioned the way to run a program and tried to help those innocent people who were convicted to get out of jail by using DNA test.

The second event was a program about "Symposium on Gender and Sexuality. I went to panel 2 which was talking about causes and effects of sexual harrassement among people in daily lives. It also estimated statistically percentage of people reported their experiences in sexual harrassement.

Background Covering

We all came from different places and raised in different ways according to family situation. I would like to cover my background when I was a little girl. I was a girl who was raised mostly by my grandmother in Cambodia. It might be a hard time to live separately from parents instead of living with grandparents. I first found that I was upset to be controlled strictly by my grandmother even I was a quiet girl at the time. My grandparents and aunties sometimes gave me attitudes that made me feel so frustrated. However, I could not say anything or fight them back mentally at all because I was younger than me and had to behave respectfully. I therefore decided to write diary of my upset days in the book. I did not know if I was mad at them or hate them for a while. Until 2006 when I was 17 years old, I left Cambodia to live with my parents in United States. I found out that my grandparents were doing for my own good. I really appreciate my grandmother who gave careful attention to me. Finally, I can understand that I behave and grew up properly in a good family background.

Personal Perspective

The most significant and unforgettable event in my childhood was my first 13th birthday celebration. I still remembered how my friends and family gathered together to enjoy my party. I was extremely pleased and excited as I had never felt this kind of crowed and gotten wishes from people. I celebrated my birthday party at home where it was located in Cambodia.

When I thought over my past as I was a little girl, I was not completely inspired by parents to study hard at school instead of being responsible on my own to study. Since my mother often gave me less concentrated, she did not know how to encourage me once I got grade or reward at school. However, I knew that she always loved and cared me secretly. Until one day at November 21, 2000, I got a surprised birthday party from my mother. She finally made it for me unexpectedly. I really had a good life in my life with plenty of gifts from friends and family. Whenever I see birthday cake, it reminds me of my first cutting 13th birthday cake. It was an awesome feeling that I could not express in description. The only thing I can say now is I love my family especially my precious parents.

Personal narrative

My research topic is effects of social development on autistic children. I would like to do this research because I want to find out what the symptoms of autim are and how much people understand about this disorder genearlly. I contribute ideas of this topic since there are increasing of autistic children over the year genearlly as I used to see one of neighbor's kid suffers from autism. At first, I did not know what autism is until I found it out in my psychology and biolology classes. I determined that autistic children are born with gene disorder and cause them to have abnormal behavior and result in diability to interact with people in the society. In order to support my research topic, I would like to do surveys to investingate people's opinion with austic children's behavior as well as their understanding to this illness. I consider the reflection from survey questions will result in identifying how peopel in the society communicate with autistic children.

Paraphrase the passage.

Students generally contribute variety of quations directly from article in the research paper. According to Lester 1976, students are known to use 10% of direct quotation in their research paper. It is useless with too many quoations so it is crucial that students understand ways to raise their own ideas to the sources in order to avoid using over limit of quotation from articles.

Reflection to Gladwell's idea

1.Education and cultural exchange are the social epidemic change in my daily life and contribute myself to society. It is important to understand that connection of cultural exchange is very useful in community. People will be able to realize how valuable to submit eduction in life and have good cultural exchange. I can consider to tip this social epidemic when I generate ideas of connection with people around me and grab all critical things into myself. According to Galdwell, he mentioned that friends can be known by circling and well socialing.

2. The most influencial chapter by Gladwell is chapter 4 which talks about Bernie Goetz who committed crime by his spontaneous behavior. This is a good example that was created to tip us how to behave in public. It is unbelievable to see Goetz shot four young boys sensitively. He also stated that first impression isn't always right, we need evidence and passion to prove.

3. The tipping idea that can apply in my academic and personal life is stickiness factor that it would be helpful for me to persude people. I want to share my ideas to people and make them trust in me. It might be one piece of little information at first, but it can motivate people around.

Discussion Questions on Chapter 3. (1&3)

1.Bernie Goetz was a thirty years old man who lived in New York City. He was recorded as the sensitive crime murderer in 1984. The story started when Goetz went into subway station in December 22, 1984. He sat next to four young black boys. Those black boys acted playfully to Goetz and annoyed him by asking “How are ya? With suspected eyes” Goetz began to feel unsecure and doubted what those black boys wanted from him. One of four black boys named Canty then asked Goetz for five dollars. Meanwhile, Goetz was really scared and suddenly pulled out his short gun shooting four black boys. Some people viewed Goetz as a hero who protected people in the subway when finally four black boys all had criminal records. In fact, Goetz is a cold-blooded murderer because he couldn’t assume people by their appearance and actions. Even though he felt dangerous around those black boys, he shouldn’t have shot them. It was a wrong cognitive mind of him that judge people in a short time and used violent to protect himself. He was considered as a sensitive murderer, ignorant and selfish because of his thin-slicing. According to Gladwell on page 138, he stated”epidemic of violence” which means people commit crimes depend on their set of behaviors and sensitive conditions. Base on Goetz’s crime, he was believed to epidemic crime that could put himself in own safety and effect of his growth up environment. Gladwell also mentioned that “And if someone wakes us up to tell us something, we automatically assume the news is going to be urgent. Therefore, Goetz’s shooting was the terrible set of behavior that concluded people spontaneously.

3.Broken Window Theory is the function of assuming something was happened before and conclude the sequence. It is known as the inevitable result of disorder in regard of Wilson and Kelling’s idea. I absolutely agree that this is true that majority of crimes occur because of circumstances and condition of places. It is the sense of intimate clue to crime committers that broken and messy places are unprotected, so they can take on actions. It is important that crime is the theory of epidemic as Gladwell claimed. Then broken window is considered as contagious. As Gladwell stated on page 141 “It can start with a broken window and spread to an entire community”. It showed that people live near community with broken window can be in danger of crimes. For example, there is a place in Philadelphia called Logan which was full of aggressive gangsters and crimes before. Logan looks unclean and has few damaged buildings. I heard many years ago gangsters always shot and fought each other in this community and crimes occurred consequently. However, community in Logan now is better and safety to live. According to Logan’s outlook, people know obviously that it is not a safety place even it was only in the past condition. In this case, it is supported Wilson and Kelling’s idea that more serious crimes happen at aggressive areas-Broken Windows.

Film Review: Traces of the Trade: A story from the Deep North

Genre: Documentary, History

I went to watch a film called “Traces of the Trade a story from the Deep North” on February 26 at 7pm to 8:30pm. It was about slave trade from Africa during 1744. The story was talked by Katrina Brown who wanted to explore the history of her ancestors playing role in slave trade. There was probably 1000 Africans exchange by her ancestor. A lot of buildings and castles were built by African slaves. Katrina mentioned about Dewolf which was known as her ancestors’ family. Dewolf involved in trading slaves. She then went to Bristol to find the mystery of slave trade with her other relatives. All of them were surprised to know that 3 generations of family ancestors involved in slave trade. They decided to find out depression of slave trade by taking trip to Ghana. Ghana was a major slave exchange was known as Triangle Slave Trade. Katrina and her all relatives went to see prisons of slaves during that time and Africa’s ceremony. African people always celebrate the ceremony as the memory of their death ancestors who were slaves in the past. Katrina and relatives argued about how to apology to all Africans. They felt guilty and ashamed when seeing African people in Ghana because of commitment of ancestors. Trip was lasted for 3 weeks in Ghana about discussion and argument about slave trade. It was a sad and interesting story to know that Katrina and her relatives changed their ideas about slave trade. They had passion and felt guilt for what their ancestors had done and apologized to all African’s ancestors.

She also showed that peer review is good for improving writing skill.

Reflective: Chapter 2

This chapter is talkig about "The Law of the Few"another information by Gladwell, which refers to how people in society connect with each other in differently ways. Gladwell stated the tip of fail and success. "Sucess of any kind of social epidemic is heavily dependent on the involvement of people with a particular and are set of social gifts",said Gladwell(pg33). Gladwell mentioned three ideas of the law: Connector, Mavean and Salesmen.

I found the most interesting arugment that Gladwell pointed out is the social connection of making friends and finding jobs. Connections in society is really important in communication and business. I determined a good experiement of one sociologist,Milgram. According to the Milgram's experiment, he found 56% of people currently find job through personal connections. For example, Gladwell stated, "People weren't getting their jobs through their friends, there were getting them through their acquaintances.(pg54)"

Reading habit

I like to read any kind of horror genre which can be about scientific or true stories. I also like reading magazine that can gain general knowlege and information around the world. Magazine is entertaining people, but also spread out useful ideas. With this kind of reading, I can remember every piece of information in there. However, if I need to read my assigned book, I have to find good ways to attract me in the book. Usually, I annotate in margin when reading, highlighting the main ideas. To do this, I can go back to review my ideas about book. Base on Gladwell's book, he wrote about people's experiences and tips to get successful. In chapter 1, he mentioned about how little thing become important and big effects. On the other hand, he turned to talk about how people connect with people through many different kinds of strategies. These two chapters gave me ideas of how to behave in society and concentrate on provided information. Reading can be everything that we are enjoying. It can improve our experience in life and lead to successful.

Chapter 2: brief summary

This chapter is talkig about "The Law of the Few" which refer to how people in society connect with each other in differently ways. Gladwell stated the tip of fail of William Dawes and success of Paul Revere. The answer is because of the different ability of connecting with people. "Sucess of any kind of social epidemic is heavily dependent on the involvement of people with a particular and are set of social gifts",said Gladwell(pg33).

Firstly, Connector is an important issue to be involved in daily life around the world. Gladwell also explained how connection work in career and social communicaton. For example, Roger Horchow who is a successful businessman has established himself perfectly in connection with people in society. Horchow pointed the easy step to interact with others is the identifying the right manner to work and get along well with outside people.Making friends and finding job through personal connection is a good strategy in social connection. Gladwell claimed,"It isn't just the case that the closer someone is to a Connector, the more powerful or the wealthier or the more opporunities he or she gets."

Another law of the few is Maven which is the sense of passing information with each other. It can be about promoting products and adversiting goods and news. The last is refering to salesmen, how can he or she accomplish in persuading custumers. It is the little sudden movement of understanding new people's desires and knowing how to behave. For example, Peter Jening on ABC news can express his facial looks differently in certain circumstances. Therefore, every little movement of verbal and nonverbal can have a big different. Gladwell particularly declared way to make soemone like another,"We need to look at the subtle, the hiddle and the unspoken."

Summary of Chapter

"The Tipping Point" How little things can make a big difference is written by Malcolm Gladwell who is a journalist in New York city. The main purpose of this book is to generate ideas of little problem can cause big effects over people around. In introduction, author indicated the background of Hush Puppies shoes and how it accomplished overtime. He also explained how to make spread things out in short time such as Hush Puppies that could spread their products successfully. According to crime which increased and declined every year because of social change. In addition, Gladwell pointed out three rules of epidemics in chapter 1 in the city of Baltimore. He reported the tips of causing big problem of disease: HIV. Firstly, disease is infected due to people's ignorance. If little thing can solve on time, it wouldn't make a big effect.

passionate research

I want to research on "Autism" which is Austistic disorder that people have neutral development. This topic passionate me because it motivates me to figure out why those autistic people react differently from normal people. They don't involve in social environment which can be problems in social changing. It is interesting that Autism keeps increasing over the years when I saw alot of kids suffer from this disorder. People with autism are born with it which is known as genetic basic. Autism doens't affect physical appearance but mental problem. Autistic people have no ability to interact in verbal society, unpredicted behavior and lack of thoughts. I also want to find out their difficulties and differs from normal people. I was wondering when seeing autistic people that they don't pay attention on certains things or people. I would like to do research on cause and effect of Autism and how to treat those people.

Diversity and Social Change

According to my perspective, diversity refers to a unique concept which people view the world at the same way. It involves and plays rule in our society lives every day, politics, business, school and work. People tend to see diversity in different way such as race, culture, religion, class, gender etc. Since diversity is differed in our own belief, it can cause the changes in social life. It can change the environment around us. For example, even though we all were born as human to be equality, society still isolate the races between white, black, and Asian. They seem to conclude our background knowledge and class differently by seeing the originality of us. However, diversity is considered to be important in workforce, requirement of gender and knowledge backgrounds are counted. Therefore, I will have a lot of opportunity to apply for that career that is worth it for my ability. It is also the exploration of safe change in culture and religious belief because it makes people change the views of their origins.

Though social environment is for everyone, some people still have difficulties to communicate and interact with other people around. This is not what they want to be but it is an involuntary behavior. This is the disorder of "Autism". Austistic people seem to be isolated from society and have abnormal behavior. I saw alot of kids suffer from this disorder when noticing they have self-stimulating activties and unusual fashion. They also don't show special interest like normal people. Autism syndrome keeps increasing over kids every year. Parents and friends sometimes feel upset and ignore autistic people. What are causes of Autism? I consider this is a good topic to do research.

personal linguistic

There are varieties of writing style in different circumstances, so I determined that writing is involved in our lives everyday, but we just never realize that. For example, writing greeting cards, texting, writing reports, writing diary etc.

Thinking back to my high school life, I thought writing was all only about a good formal paper which was completed in proper words and grammer. I thought a good reader is a good writer, so I always read my favorite kinds of book to improve my writing. Over my past year, I enjoyed reading horror, romantic and true life stories. I was hoping reading my favorite books would help me to be an academic writer in English. However, I was wrong. Reading has to be corresponded to everything such as scientific, research, or make up story.

In fact, writing isn't an unique work, but it can be everything that we can write to attract readers and ourselves even it is easy or hard. Moreover, it can be from writers' mind and their experiences.Writing has its own purpose depending who the audience is. The easiest part in writing is to write about what I am interested in and my own story such as create a story about whatever genre is or writing about my life. It seems to be not complicated because I have a story that set on mind and come up immediately. This type of writing was always done in high school. On the other hand, when I came to college, writing technique wasn't as easy as before. It needs to be in college level and written in different ways according to the topic. At first, I need to write paper in required pages which a topic I didn't know at all.

The most difficult part in college writing is the introduction. Introduction must be stated out the main point about the whole essay and thesis statement. Also, I found it hard to write a research paper when writing report in science classes. Even though I used to learn other languages, Chinese and Cambodian, I still consider writing in English is more difficult than those two languages because of grammer and punctuation. Chinese and Cambodia don't have those specific grammer rules to use in past tense like English. Therefore, I would love to develop myself into a better writer in practicing and focusing.

About me

My name's Soukiev Taing. I'm from Philadelphia and majoring in Pre-Pharmacy. This is my pleasure to enroll in this English 202 class. I like doing research in science, but I found it hard to write a good research paper and report paper. Therefore, I'm taking an opportunity to be in this class and learn to be a good writer. I also like reading which can absorb writer's passion through their words. When I read, I understand the meaning of that paper. However, I couldn't summarize it due to least experience in writing. I hope I'm in the right track to gain the knowlege in this class.
